Maggie Sloan
Art Director & Designer
hi friends!
My name is Maggie.

I love to sing loudly, cut my own hair, make others laugh, play rugby and create using anything and everything! I am a Designer and Art Director and can hold my own in copywriting, photography, set design, and animation. I will raise my hand for any new task because I'm not afraid to challenge myself in order to gain new skills. I also have a knack for streamlining organizational processes. I thrive in fast paced environments and love to stay busy. My favorite part of the design process is collaboration amongst fellow creatives. I am fiercely proud of my work because I believe it is not only a reflection of me but also the team that supported and guided me along the way.

My Design Journey
I come from a long line of creative people: painters, ceramists, jewelry makers, self-taught carpenters and seamstresses. I was surrounded by sculptures, landscapes, and woodworking that were created by my loved ones. In my high school art classes I realized that I had a natural understanding of shadows and highlights and how to convey realism with graphite, colored pencil, and charcoal. I loved being in a flow state absolutely absorbed by the creative process. I was encouraged to be creative but more as a hobby as no one in my family was a professional full time artist. I wasn't sure what my career path looked like but I hoped to be creative in some aspect at least.

As I headed into college I thought I wanted to be a lawyer, so I went to SMU to eventually go to SMU's Dedman School of Law. I know what you're thinking. Lawyer? How is that creative? Well, from my little experience, categorically... it is not. I was a very high achieving student, and wanted to commit myself to more schooling than most I guess. Don't get me wrong, I would've made a great lawyer but I think I would've always missed my love of art and expression. So, before my plan A came to fruition (thankfully), I was introduced to the Creative Advertising program at Temerlin Advertising Institute. I was immediately intoxicated by the energy of digital design and art direction. It was electric being in a fast paced environment surrounded by artistic talented people who all loved creating something everyday as a team. Advertising as a career shattered my preconceived notion that all artists were tucked away hidden from the world in a solitary personal studio only to emerge when they put on exhibits at their local art gallery. I loved sitting around a table talking, bantering and bouncing ideas off of one another paired with the more personal creation time. This is when I was able to lock in on learning a new Adobe program or storyboarding new fun ad concepts. I still was able to experience the meditative state of flow that I loved from studio art with digital design. I chose this career path because I learned creating campaigns and/or designing marketing assets is a team effort. It is reliant on a community where we all build upon each other's ideas but still allow space for each individual to create with their own personal style or expression.

Since graduating from college, I have worked at in-house marketing departments as a graphic designer and also at a couple of public relations agencies as an art director. Currently, I volunteer as a co-social media manager for my adult rugby club's instagram page more than doubling engagement and followers in the past year. My skills and experience include but are not limited to: promotional video ad storyboards, paid and owned social design, pitch deck layouts, advertising campaign concepts, photoshoot set design, photography art direction, video editing, animation, illustration, print ad design, packaging design, basic photography, and leadership.
In my personal time, I paint, draw, craft little trinkets, and thrift flip clothes and housewares for interior design. All of the wall décor in my home has been made by me. And so far I believe my house guests aren't feigning surprise and amazement when I tell them that fact, or at least, I hope they aren't. My current obsession is embroidery, cross stitching, knitting, and crocheting . (If you want a scarf, washcloth or any other rectangle shaped thing let me know because I've gotten really really good at those.)
I am currently looking for full-time employment and have most recent experience at The Michaels Companies, Inc. as a Paid Media Designer, focusing on storyboarding video and designing static promotional campaign ads for social media channels and streaming platforms.

I am also available for additional freelancing and commissioned art!
